Mulching: what it involves
Mulching spreads a layer of material over soil around plants, trees and beds.
Mulching spreads a layer of material over soil around plants, trees and beds.
Common mulches include shredded bark, wood chips, pine straw and compost. A layer of a few inches holds moisture, slows weeds, evens out soil temperature and gives beds a finished look as it breaks down and feeds the soil.
Beds are usually weeded and edged first, and old mulch that has packed down is loosened or topped up. Mulch is kept a short distance from tree trunks and house walls, because piling it against them invites rot and pests.
Color, texture and how rapidly a material decomposes vary, and fresh wood mulch can briefly draw nitrogen from the soil. Bed size, the type of material and the condition of the existing layer describe the job, as do photos of the beds and a note about plants that must be protected.
